Oscar Predictions
February 28, 2018
The 2018 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 4. It has been a wonderful year for film and so many films are deserving of recognition. A good thing to keep in mind going into the ceremony is that the Oscars aren’t everything. A lot of it has to do with politics, and just because a film isn’t recognized by the Oscars doesn’t mean it’s not a quality movie. That said, we do have our own opinions regarding who should will in contrast with the predicted winners.
Best Picture
SHOULD win: Call Me By Your Name. Check out our film review here to read more about why we loved this movie.
WILL win: This will be an interesting toss-up, as most movies nominated we could see winning. But based off previous award shows, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri has a good chance of winning.
Best Actor in a Leading Role
SHOULD win: Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) was outstanding, and undoubtedly deserves the Oscar.
WILL win: Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) will almost definitely win, unfortunately.
Best Actress in a Leading Role
SHOULD win: Frances McDormand (Three Billboards). McDormand was fantastic in her role as a grieving and angry mother.
WILL win: Frances McDormand (Three Billboards)
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
SHOULD win: Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) We loved Dafoe in “The Florida Project” (an movie that the Oscars snubbed, by the way) and he definitely deserves the award.
WILL win: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards) Based on past award shows, it’s likely that Rockwell will win.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
SHOULD win: Laurie Metcalf (Ladybird)
WILL win: Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
Best Animated Feature Film
SHOULD win: Loving, Vincent
WILL win: Coco
Best Cinematography
SHOULD win: Dunkirk
WILL win: Dunkirk or Blade Runner 2049
Best Costume Design
SHOULD win: Phantom Thread
WILL win: Phantom Thread
Best Directing
SHOULD win: Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) or Greta Gerwig (Ladybird). Guadagnino wasn’t even nominated, which is ridiculous, but he should win nonetheless.
WILL win: Guillermo del Toro will most likely win. He definitely deserves it, but we just felt like Guadagnino and Gerwig deserves it more.
