Player of the Matchday: Jordan Pickford
Big games need big players, and oh, did Jordan Pickford step up. In the opening game at Everton’s brand new stadium, with 52,000 people in attendance, Everton had a dream start. Thanks to goals by Iliman Ndiaye and James Garner, The Toffees found themselves up 2-0 heading into the final 15 minutes of the 2nd half. However, a handball by Kieran Dewsbury-Hall gave Brighton a chance to come back in the game and cut the lead in half, but when a hero was needed, super Jordan Pickford stepped up, and saved the game, diving to his left and stopping Danny Welbeck’s penalty. A heroic moment from a player who has stepped up many times for club and country, and did it once again, in a game immortalized in Evertonian history.
Moment of the Matchday: Rio Ngumoha Goal vs Newcastle United
What. A. Moment. On his debut, 16-year old Rio Ngumoha has just scored a game winner in the 100th minute. The scenes were absolutely incredible, and with all the drama surrounding Alexander Isak this summer this goal must have been even more sweet. However, let’s not discredit Newcastle. Coming back from 2-0 with a red card against the reigning champions is no easy task, and they look like they could have a strong season even without Isak. It still wasn’t enough though, as that relentless mentality from Arne Slot’s team shone through.
