I could watch movies forever. Over the course of my life, I’ve been my happiest when I’m watching movies. My love for cinema is mainly a result of the influence of my mom, who works in the film industry. She had my sister and me watch some of the most highly regarded films in history, and now I enjoy watching those films more than I do the mediocre comedy-dramas starring Lily Collins. My mom exposed my sister and me to the great films as opposed to the good films at a very young age, resulting in my passion for cinema. I often feel like people in my generation don’t have as strong of an appreciation for films like “The Godfather,” “Gone with the Wind,” or “Dances with Wolves” which makes me feel like my passion and connection to films is more valuable. There’s thousands of terrific films out there, and I’d like to think that I’ve seen and loved most of them. After cheering at a football game on a Friday night, you will probably find me listening to Lana Del Rey and movie soundtracks on my drive home, and then watching “The Usual Suspects” or “Roman Holiday” for the millionth time, or finding a movie I hadn’t seen before. I feel like I pay attention to things in movies that my sister or my friends don’t, like that one shot from “Goodfellas” which starts outside the restaurant and then cuts inside, or how the best, most artistic part of “Se7en” is the suspense and anticipation while Mills and Somerset are in the car with Jonathan Doe. My mom has schooled me on who impacted the film industry so that I can know and appreciate their work, and on what makes a film truly great. It’s too bad I don’t want to go into the movie industry, but by not doing that, I can still be an audience member, which is arguably the most important part of the movie industry. I can find happiness for myself when I’m watching the right movie on a big screen rather than watching sixty-second videos on a small one. I’ll watch any kind of movie depending on how I feel, but regardless of whether I’m watching a neo-noir, a comedy, or a drama, I find peace with cinema.
